Cauliflower and Onion Salad

The taste is mildly sweet and tangy and the salad tastes best when chilled.

  • 2 tablespoon oil (tel)
  • ¾ kilogram cauliflower each floret cut into thick slices (phool gobi)
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 tablespoon garlic chopped (lahsun)
  • ¾ teaspoon mustard seed (kali rai)
  • 150 gm onion or 1 medium onion sliced (piyaz)
  • ½ teaspoon red chili powder (lal mirch)
  • ½ teaspoon cumin powder (zeera)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar optional
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice


  1. Steam cauliflower with water and salt in a pan for 5 minutes.
  2. Remove cauliflower in a plate. In the same pan pour oil, add garlic and mustard seed.Fry for 1 minute until garlic is golden and mustard seed crackles.

  3. Now add onions, red chili powder and cumin powder.
  4. Stir and add steamed cauliflower. Cover and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  5. Next, add sugar and lemon juice. Mix well.
  6. Serve immediately or chill in the fridge before serving.

Recipe Notes

You can more veggies like carrot, pea, pumpkin with cauliflower. Replace these veggies with less cauliflower. You can also serve them with yogurt or green chutney.
